Trigonometry toys project: circles are triangles... Trust us.
The goal of this project was to create fun and interactive toys that represent concepts in Trigonometry. I worked with two other students and we decided to create a large and interactive unit circle. The unit circle is used to understand sines and cosines of angles found in right triangles. The unit circle has a center at the origin (0,0) and a radius of one unit. Angles are measured starting from the positive x-axis in quadrant 1 and continue around the unit circle. The ray from the origin to a point on the circle (x,y) will give the trigonometric functions of the angle through the coordinates. See the write-up below for a more in-depth explanation.
In reflection, I feel very accomplished of our final product. I'm very proud of the refinement concerning the labeling of points on the circle. Initially, it was just in colored pencil, but it was very hard to read. We were going to leave it as it was but eventually decided that we should make the writing easier to see. After spending extra time rewriting the old labels with Sharpie, our piece looks 10x better than it did before.
Throughout the time spent on this project, work time was interjected with lessons concerning other math topics. Although it was a bit confusing trying to multitask different math concepts, I enjoyed being able to continue progressing through our math curriculum while still being able to work on this enjoyable project.
