Travel SKit
The point of this project was to develop Spanish communication skills through travel scenarios. In the beginning of this project, we studied a vast amount of vocabulary relating to travel so that if we were to be thrown into a different country, we’d have the skill to find a hotel, eat, and secure travel home. Our class was then divided up into different groups; each assigned a specific vocabulary topic, such as money, as well as a specific Spanish-speaking country. We then researched the cultural and linguistic variations of our chosen country and developed a short performance skit that conveyed the vocabulary that we studied. These skits were refined over a process of three weeks and memorized in their entirety so that when these were performed in front of an audience, the skits were as entertaining and educational as possible.
All in all I thoroughly enjoyed this project. The vocabulary memorization was very challenging due to the large amount of terms in a confined schedule, but was also a necessary aspect to the entirety of this project. I now feel extremely confident in my ability to communicate in Spanish at least when traveling so that I could ask for food and a warm bed. My group researched the country of Chile, which I am now dying to visit. Its beautiful landscapes and diverse ecosystems make it a must-see destination for any outdoor enthusiast such as myself. To make our skits as entertaining as possible, we studied theatre and all the rules associated with acting, which proved to be a very insightful process. It’s fascinating that physical actions, such as stage positioning, are universal to all humans and aren’t confined by any language barrier. I look forward to projects like these in the future.
