La poesía de la comida
The purpose of this project was to learn about the cuisine and culture of a Spanish-speaking country of our choice by studying a specific dish. After choosing a country and conducting preliminary research, we selected a dish to study. An in-depth investigation of our dish's recipe was conducted which allowed us to learn about the culture of our dish through the ingredients and the context in which it is cooked in our country. We also studied the famous Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. Neruda is a world-renowned for a writings a wide variety of poetry, including his many odes to food. Inspired by our recipes, Neruda's odes, as well as the cultural take-away, we constructed an ode to go along with our dish in both the Spanish and English languages. The piece de resistanceis of the project is everyone then cooked their dish to serve to the public during exhibition while reading their odes
Looking back on this project, I have learned a great deal about the history of my country of choice (Spain) and the significance of my dish (paella) in its history. Paella originally came about as a leftover meal when kings gave their scraps that they didn't want to their workers. These workers then took all these ingredients and cooked them at once, creating a large amount of food for very little cost. The most challenging part of this project was finding all the necessary ingredients for my recipe where they are not naturally found. For this very reason, I had to cut both lobster and squid out of my recipe and replaced them with cod. If I were to repeat this project, I would choose a food that was simpler to cook than paella, which so many steps and takes a very long time to prepare. As for the exhibition, I felt that most of the people were just there for the food and weren't that interested in my poem, but non the less I still enjoyed sharing a new cultural experience with others. In conclusion, I am most proud of successfully cooking my first truly Spanish dish and having it turn out quit well. I see this dish being very prevalent in my culinary future; I will be making it again soon.
