The purpose of this project was to investigate the political processes that function in our country. Before diving into the actual project, we researched legislative processes and how bills become laws. We then were placed and divided into roles as members of the US Senate. Some of us were senators while others were Lobbyists or Experts. As a class, we chose to discuss two issues in our senate session: Climate Change and the Fiscal Cliff. More research into each issue was conducted and numerous bills were written. One final bill from each issue was selected. Speeches were written and amendments were brainstormed. Everything lead up to one three-and-a-half hour long model senate session. The the Fiscal Cliff bill was passed, while the Climate Change bill wasn't.
My role in this entire process was the part of Barack Obama and Joe Biden, the president and vice-president respectively. I wrote an outline for the senators specifying what I'm currently doing to combat the two discussed issues, with the goal that it would inform the legislation writing process in a way that I would want to approve. As the actual model senate was transpiring, I was also writing my executive speech, which I would present at the very end of Senate. This speech would either detail my reasoning behind either signing or vetoing the bill(s) placed before me.
Please see the included video reflection below for more detail.
