Los Cuentos Infantiles
In this project the goal was to create a children's story about a Spanish speaking town in Latin America. First, we chose a country that spoke Spanish (such as Honduras) and collected some general notes on the culture of the country. We then chose a specific town or city (such as Tela) and collected more in-depth research pertaining to what the day-to-day life of a local looked like. We also read and studied common aspects of children stories. We learned how to focus our stories around a theme and use colorful design with simple sentences. After writing the stories, we refined our work and then transferred them to blank books. Artwork was then created to accompany the story and represent the text with simple, easy-to-follow images. For this project’s exhibition, we went to a local elementary school and read our stories to a first grade Spanish class.
Upon reflection, the project was a great success. The second grade class greatly enjoyed our stories and asked us a myriad of questions. We were able to teach them about Spanish language and culture and everyone had a great time. Only an hour was allotted to reading our stories, which was way too brief. For future classes, I would suggest two or more hours. This change would allow for more interaction and learning with the classes. I gained a deeper understanding of the Spanish language and how the class content can be applied to the real world. As far as my book is concerned, it contains the best artwork that I have ever produced for any project. My illustrations are clean and actually resemble what they are attempting to depict. I worked slowly and broke down each drawing into parts, completing them one at a time and making sure that my lines were crisp and my color stayed within the boundaries. The amount of time that was allotted gave me enough time to create and refine my book to the best of my abilities.
