Hello and welcome back.
Last night’s debate was a very interesting discourse between a shockingly large number of candidates. Moving forward, everyone is asking the question of who won the debate?
In my humble opinion, I’d say that no one really won. I will admit that my views prominently lean on the liberal side of things, but I am not a close-minded person. Strictly speaking from the perspective of qualities I look for in a leader, I wouldn’t be comfortable with any of the candidates.
Although topics of substance were touched upon, the candidates focused on each other more than on the actual questions. Everyone had a bone to pick with someone else, whether it was someone’s wife, their business practices, speaking Spanish, or how they looked. A very fine example of this is Donald Trump’s discourse with Rand Paul:
“First of all, Rand Paul shouldn't even be on this stage,” Trump said. “He's number 11 and has 1 percent in the polls and how he got up here there is far too many people anyway --Rand Paul shouldn't even be on this stage!”
Paul shot back, calling Trump "sophomoric."
“Do we want someone like that to be negotiating with Iran"? he asked. "I think really there is a sophomoric quality that is entertaining about Mr. Trump...Would we not all be worried to have someone like that in charge of the nuclear arsenal”?
Trump shot back with another zinger.
“I never attacked him on his looks and believe me, there is plenty of subject matter there," he said. "That I can tell you."
Obviously, last night can be called nothing more than political theater.
Even when the candidates attempted to answer the presented queries, the responses were full of nothing but the typical political deceit.
The most shocking fact check was Carly Fiorina’s vivid description of a fully formed fetus on the table kicking and screaming as the doctor’s tried to “harvest its brains” that was included on a Planned Parenthood video. When I heard that during the debate, I somewhat doubted it. In reality, it turns out that PP doesn’t even have a video showing anything remotely similar to what Fiorina described. All that the PP videos show are samples of fetal tissue and a stillborn child, nothing more. The fact that Fiorina said that a video containing what is described above was released by PP is a complete lie. The actual video in question originates from a technician who works with fetal collections and has described this story to Fiorina. It is unknown if a video of this actually does exist.
Although there is no real winner, I do feel that Carly Fiorina does deserve a tip of the hat for being able to maintain her composure while being berated by Trump. Her comeback to Trump’s comment about her appearance in a Rolling Stone interview was the stand-out zinger of the debate by far, “Women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said."
Kudos to you Mrs. Fiorina.
